Fun Lovin' Speed Freaks
I was able to stalk...I mean interview...two members of the Trek racing team: Tara, from Team Trek Grassroots, and Katie, from Team Trek East Coast. The big news is that as of 11:15, Katie's team has this event pretty well locked up with 21 total laps. Just to give you an idea of how fast these young ladies are, Katie's fastest lap was 1:07, while Tara turned a 1:15. That's for 13 torturous miles. Both say they love this race because of its carnival atmosphere, and because it's much more laid-back than your typical NORBA event. "There's nothing better than having people cheer you at the top of a climb at 3 am," says Tara. And both agree that the difficult course is great for technical training. As for the all-nighter ambience? Katie was rather philosophical: "Once a year you can lose a little sleep."

Raised by Wolves
Before this whole freak show really got underway, I talked to the members of Team Wolf Pack from the Alexandria/Falls Church, Virginia, area. Frank, Wayne, Ryan, Jack and team wrench Moose were hanging on the deck Friday night, sipping beers and smoking cigarettes--well, Jack was smoking them. This particular club of classy fellows have been here between two to four times, depending on who you talk to, and I can't remember exaclty who I talked to at the moment. Because they're just a couple of regular guys, I thought they would be perfect to give advice. Here's a few quotes that I think you'll want to keep in mind should you decide to participate next year.

"If you take your clothes off at the top of the final downhill, you get a big cheer when you roll into the changing tent."

"If you come upon a section with lots of cameras and people cheering you on, get off and walk."

"If you want to get into the Clydesdale class, but one rider is a little light, here's what he should do: drink a lot of beer, eat a lot of food and don't go to the bathroom until after the race."
