17th May

4:00 p.m. - Wakeracing's - The Crew, Less Two still rock'n'roll
"Wild" Bill Lanzilotta completed the first two laps of the course already, and is waiting to start his second stint in the saddle. He hands this writer a sample of his sponsor Terrapin Beer's product (way to sweeten the story!) as he discusses strategy:

"We're doing two laps at a time per rider, and using 29ers. It's a definite advantage on a power course like this. With the 29(inch diameter) wheels, you can just keep it rolling over any obstacles."

It appears to be working: by the start of lap 7, Wakeracing held a 7 minute advantage over the 5-man Faster Moustache team to hold the overall lead (all categories). The bearded biochemistry professor from Athens, GA also rode the day's fastest lap thus far with a 40:07.

18th May

11:15 a.m. - Wakeracing's The Crew, Less Two Clinches the Victory...and Stops.
At 23 laps ridden, the Duo Pro category win is secure and there's no need to continue the suffering. After vying for the overall victory and holding the lead for 11 of the first 12 laps, Wakeracing's The Crew Less Two falls victim to the extra manpower of the 5 person teams, and their own ambition.

It seems that a few hours of sleep - resulting in a (virtual) 5 hour lap that dropped the pair from second place overall - were essential to keeping the legs and spirits fresh for an upcoming race next weekend.

Another weekend, another 24...

About your reporter
Hi! I'm Paul Skilbeck. A journalist and press guy on the international mountain bike racing scene since 1989, I am your humble reporter for the 2008 Suzuki 24 Hour Series opener. This is how I look in my reporting clothes, but if you roll over the image you'll see that I'm not merely a pencil squeezer.

Before we get started, please don't forget the support by Suzuki of 24-hour endurance racing when considering your next 4-wheeled purchase. Your support of sponsors is what keeps them supporting the sport!
