Terri Wahlberg walks in a flat

Women's Solo update (Saturday 5:30pm) by Ron Georg
Four and a half hours into the race, Jari Kirkland has turned in her third lap in what was to have been a hotly contested race-but with the withdrawal of powerhouse Pua Sawicki, Kirkland is pulling slowly out ahead of the pack. With 18 minutes on her nearest competitor, Kirkland is on pace to dominate the class.
For now, the race in women's solo would seem to be between Kris Cannon and Cat Morrison, who swapped places on their third laps, with Cannon taking a 30-second advantage. With just half a minute separating the two, both should be looking ahead and hoping Kirkland's pace slows.
Ellsworth rider Terri Wahlberg was another potential challenger to Kirkland's anticipated dominance, but Wahlberg broke a chain on her second lap, and she turned in a 2-hour-plus lap running in with her bike.
Meanwhile, Liz Baumgardt-Kays is easily defending her points title in the six-race series. Baumgardt-Kays has raced all four races in the series to date, putting her total out of reach of any other riders. "If you're simply going to focus on the one person who's going to win all the time, you're going to be defeated right away," she said. "You've got to ride your own race."
Unfortunately, most of the women in the race didn't get a chance to hear Kirkland's impassioned plea for more support for women's racing at the Granny Gear press conference. They might be more comfortable trailing the leader if they'd heard her proclaim "I have a huge love for the women who do this sport, for sure."
