Dax Massey after a fast first lap
Dax Massey cools off in the shade after a sizzling first lap of 53 minutes. His team-mate, Dean Miller went two better, recording 51 minutes for his first lap. The team looks unassailable.

They Came, They Shook and They Baked

Team Shake 'n' Bake of Dax Massey (34) and Dean Miller (40) from Boulder/Littleton, Colorado, riding in the Duo Pro category could just as easily have entered the single speed category, or hard tails. For that what they rode was hard tail single-speeds.

And they shook and baked so fast that nobody could pass them. Clocking early laps of 53 and 51 minutes, respectively, they quickly saw off their competition and staked their claim for the overall race win, as well as their chosen category.

"I made pretty good time with the rigid frame," said Massey at the end of his scorching first lap. "It was a matter of picking the good lines and focusing on being smooth. It's a great course," he said.

Even with a single speed Massey was able to power up the main climb of the course, but freely admitted he was ready to scale it by whatever means it took. "If it takes some foot travel, I'll do that, but I will try to ride that climb every time."
